A Systemized Approach toward System Safety Training with Recommended Learning Objectives

After many years of individually and collectively providing training in system safety, safety engineering, and safety management an extensive volume of both materials and experience have been acquired. Currently the authors have developed or expanded this material into modules, which are comprised of specific system safety-related topics. During this work a prime question came to mind―What are the core topics that should be fundamental to any system safety training curriculum? Core modules must cover essential topics that provide base knowledge upon which participants can demonstrate comprehension through the successful conduct of controlled analysis. During the development of the ore modules it became apparent that varied participant experiences and organizational backgrounds would require a full course to be potentially both broad and flexible. Additional modules were developed to expand and customize the course dependent on the needs of the participants. The next phase of development was an instructor's guide and student handbook, which are also in modular form, allowing for flexibility with realtime changes and reformatting capability. Whenever possible we conduct (and recommend) training need analysis to assess participants' backgrounds and levels of system safety knowledge. Also conducted is a task analysis to develop specific learning objectives based on participants' expected system safety applications. As a result of this analysis we are able to customize system safety training by selection and application of the appropriate modules. Still, it is apparent that while diverse populations will participate in typical system safety training programs, it is the strength and depth of the core modules and presenter capabilities which determines the successful outcome of each training program. This paper presents an overview of our training efforts.
