A predominantly experimental study was performed on PIN diode limiter spike leakage, and some ways to reduce the spike leakage level are discussed. Dependencies on the thickness of the intrinsic region and input power are given. On this basis, a miniaturized electromagnetic protection module with low insertion loss (IL), low spike leakage power and quick response ability has been designed by using the software of advanced design system (ADS). The measured results show that the electromagnetic protection module with multistage PIN and TVS diodes could suffer the fast rising front electromagnetic pulse (FREMP) with 2000V peak voltage and voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) is <;1.3dB, and the small signal IL of the circuit is <;0.1 dB in the frequency range from 30 to 88 MHZ.
