Physiological estimation of level of understanding of each sentence in second language reading

We have developed individual adaptive estimation expressions to estimate a learner's Level of Understanding (LoU; four levels) of each second-language sentence by analyzing the learner's physiological signals, such as electroencephalogram, blood volume pulse, and eye tracking data. The determination coefficients of the expressions ranged from 0.55 to 0.81 (the mean was 0.69). We found that the learner's physiological signals specifically change when the sentence was considered difficult to understand. This paper describes an experiment in which such data were recorded and multiple regression analysis to derive the expressions for the relationships between the physiological indexes and self-reported LoU of each sentence in second-language reading.
