Optimal Rotor Pole Study of Outward Rotor Switched Flux Permanent Magnet Machine for Downhole Application

In recent years, deep and ultra deep water drilling for oil and gas exploration become more popular due to improved production and low offshore environmental effects. Since, electric machine plays a leading role and become the prominent part of drilling application due to majority of problems occurs in the motor. Therefore, this research work particularly concerns about rotor pole study of outward rotor switched flux permanent magnet machine for downhole application. By utilizing several design specifications and restrictions, design methodology and preliminary outcomes of the proposed machine at various rotor pole number and 12 stator slots are exhibited. Initial, the profile of flux linkage and distribution, induced voltages, cogging torque analyses are conducted at open circuit. Then, the average electromagnetic torque and speed characteristics at various torque-power conditions are examined under 2D- finite element analysis (FEA). Finally, outward rotor machine with 12 stator slot and 22 rotor pole generates higher torque, power with low cogging torque.
