Free space optical (FSO) communication systems offer numerous advantages, such as their flexibility in redeployment and high data rates, as compared to optical fiber-based communications. However, these systems are susceptible to a wide range of fading phenomena due to the extremely random fluctuations in the atmospheric conditions. In this letter, a simple semi-deterministic approach is proposed to calculate the average bit error probability (ABEP) performance of FSO systems operating in arbitrary fading conditions, considering the intensity modulation - direct detection (IM/DD) on-off keying (OOK) modulation scheme.
