Effect of Steel Slag Content on the Performance of Traditional Ceramics System

In order to observer the effect of steel slag content on the traditional ceramics system,batches with 0,40 and 60 wt.% steel slag were mixed with clay,feldspar and quartz as raw materials of ceramics.Thermal effects of the mixtures were estimated by differential thermal analysis.The microstructures of ceramics samples and the formed crystalline phases were studied with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).Finally,the mechanical properties of the samples were also measured.The results show that with the addition of steel slag,the sintering temperature of ceramics reduced,the main crystalline phase of quartz and mullite changed into anorthite or pyroxene phase and the bending strength increased.The formation of pyroxene phase improves the mechanical properties of ceramics based on steel slag.Moreover,with the content of calcium,magnesium and iron component increasing,the sintering and the phase transformation temperature of prepared ceramics would decrease.
