Mode-locked laser diodes pose an interesting alternative to commercially available femtosecond laser systems like Ti:sapphire lasers. They offer higher overall efficiency due to direct electrical pumping and can be built extremely compact. An advantage compared to fiber lasers is the huge flexibility of the emission wavelength which can be realized by different semiconductor compounds. In addition semiconductor laser diodes have potentially high cost efficiency.
