Learning objects and online labs: The micronet experience

Scientific education is strongly based on laboratory activities, but today laboratories are radically different with respect to their 20th century precursors. Computer technologies, digital networks and on line learning platforms are exploited increasingly in order to publish teaching materials, course calendars, class news and to support on line discussions, assignments and reviews even for face to face classes. Laboratory activities are not well integrated in this scenario yet, remaining mostly face to face. The ability to design, implement, use and evaluate effective learning objects to support online laboratories is essential to prepare the next generation of scientists, engineers, mathematicians and technicians. In this scenario the paper discusses the results of our experience in designing and delivering learning objects for online lab activities with U-Portal (a Moodle-like platform) and with MicroNet (our web enabled electron microscope) in the framework of an Italian e-learning initiative for high school teachers.
