WIENERWALD TUNNEL-A CHALLENGING INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT WITH TWO 11-KM-LONG TBM DRIVES

The Wienerwald Tunnel is part of the new railway route between Vienna and St.rnP?lten, currently Austria′s largest tunnel project. By 2012, this new rail link will reducerntravel time between Vienna and St. P?lten from 40 to 25 minutes. The technical challengesrnof the project include conventional tunneling in large cross sections on a lengthrnof 2,35 km, as well as the use of two tunnel boring machines with a diameter of 10,68 mrnon a length of 10,7 km each. Challenging geological conditions call for experienced tunnelingrncrews and immediate reaction to actual conditions. On site segment casting andrnhauling of large material quantities over major distances need sophisticated logistics.
