The volume of the mold cavity is greatly reduced in thin slab casting. Together with a high casting speed, the feeding of molten steel into the thin slab casting mold is more difficult than with the conventional process. Free surface fluctuations and meniscus instability are common problems caused by feeding molten steel from a submerged entry nozzle (SEN) into a thin slab mold. Therefore, an optimized SEN design is especially important in achieving a stable thin slab casting process. In this paper, mathematical and physical modelling was used to compare the transient flow phenomena in thin slab casting mold for three different SEN profiles.
