The time varying fields of surface winds, sea state andrncurrents associated with Hurricane Ivan (2004) in the NorthernrnGulf of Mexico are specified through the implementation andrnapplication of advanced numerical wind, wave and oceanrnhindcast models, all adapted to the entire Gulf of Mexico atrnhigher resolution than used in previous simulations of tropicalrncyclones in this basin. An extensive validation of the wind andrnwave hindcast indicates that the storm response is specifiedrnwith 10% or better accuracy. No public domain currentrnmeasurements were available in Ivan to validate the currentrnmodel results but validation of the same modeling technologyrnagainst the extensive currents measurements in previous Gulfrnof Mexico hurricanes suggests that the spatial and verticalrnstructure of the primary current speed response to Ivan arernreasonably well simulated.
