DEVELOPMENT OF A DYNAMIC MODELING TOOLFOR OILED WILDLIFE FACILITY DEVELOPMENTAND OPERATIONS

The planning and construction of oiled wildlife facilities can be arndaunting task both before and during oil spill responses. Thernunderstanding of the general activities involved in such work, inrncombination with an appreciation for the infrastructure necessaryrnto complete these activities, is necessary in order to develop a carerncenter able to provide adequate care for impacted animals. Tornaddress this need, this paper reviews the overall flow of oiledrnanimals through a spill center, and details the requirements (inrnterms of space and utilities) of each of the defined areas in arnfacility. It also presents a recently-created dynamic modeling toolrndesigned to better plan and establish such facilities, and tests thisrnmodel by presenting the results of three separate scenarios wherernchanges to care protocols and available resources were includedrnto test how such alterations impact the overall success of an oiledrnwildlife response.
