Owing to the ever-increased demand for product qualityrnand productivity in modern sheet metal stamping process, onlinernmonitoring has become a common practice in shop floorsrnaround the world. Based on a market survey, the mostrncommonly used monitoring signal is the strain signal, alsorncalled the tonnage signal. However, few studies have beenrncarried out to find how the strain signal is generated and wherernthe sensors should be placed. This paper presents a study on therntonnage signal using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). First, arnFEA model is developed using ANSYS? to simulate therndeformation of a metal stamping press. Then, the simulationrnresults are validated by experiments. The simulation andrnexperiment results indicate that the tonnage signal is dependentrnon the sheet metal stamping force as well as the construction ofrnthe stamping press. The sensor location is also discussed.
