The city of Dunedin contains a number of activernlandslides that have affected residential properties,rnroads and infrastructure. Although field surveys arerncarried out occasionally, many of the slides move in arnstick-slip fashion, and it is extremely difficult and timeconsuming to measure their movement adequately inrnthe field.rnIn this paper, we investigate the viability of repeat-passrnorbital differential radar interferometry (InSAR), usingrndata from the ERS satellites, for measuring surfacerndeformation in urban Dunedin, with the intention ofrndetermining the future usefulness of Envisat ASAR forrnthis purpose. Although we do not detect motion on anyrnof the known slides, and the reasons for this arernexplored, we do discover previously undetected surfacernmovement of reclaimed land in the harbour area ofrnDunedin between 1996 and 2003.
