Low grade boehmitic bauxite was used in the production of sintered bauxite. The high Fe_2O_3 and CaO in the bauxite were removed by hydrochloric acid leaching and decreased respectively to around 1,50% and 0,1%. The alumina content of the leached bauxite sintered at 1700℃ for 4h increased to around 90%. The alumina and silica in the sintered bauxite were converted to corundum (∝-Al_2O_3) and mullite (3Al_2O_3.2SiO_2). SEM investigation showed that bauxite grains were in the form of large aggregates. The sintered bauxite obtained after firing at 1700℃ for 4h had a mean particle size and bulk density of 176 μm and 2,58 g/cm~3, respectively.
