ADSORPTION CHARACTERISTICS OF VOCs ON VARIOUS ADSORBENTS

This study investigates the adsorption characteristics of chloroform and acetonitrile on commercial activated carbon (C 1),rncarbon fibers (F1 and F2), and sludge adsorbent (S1). Adsorption temperature, VOC concentration, physico-chemicalrncharacteristic of adsorbents and VOC diffusion coefficient are investigated in this work. Results indicate the chloroformrninfluent concentration is from 590-7800 ppm, the adsorption capacity on F2, F1, C1 and S1 range from 240 to 600, from 150 torn235, from 205 to 370 and from 90 to 240 mg/g, respectively. Besides, the adsorption capacity of acetonitrile is from 11 to 80rnmg/g corresponding to the influent range from 310 to 2700 ppm. The adsorption rate of carbon fiber is faster than activatedrncarbon and sludge adsorbent due to the diameter of fiber is smaller than both activated carbon and sludge. In addition, thernsurface area of fiber is also higher than the others. According to the adsorption kinetic curves, the diffusion coefficient ofrnVOC on activated carbon and sludge adsorbent is in the vicinity of 10-7 cm2 s-1. The diffusion coefficient of VOC on two kindsrnof carbon fibers range from 10-10-10-11 cm2 s-1. The pore size of carbon fibers are smaller than activated carbon and sludgernadsorbent that corresponded to the diffusion coefficient of carbon fibers are smaller than the others.
