This paper presents a novel approach for preparing carbon encapsulated nanomaterials of magnetic metals with a kind ofrnbiomaterials – apoferritin molecules as the starting materials to trap the precursors of the magnetic metals. Here werndemonstrate that Mn particles can be effectively encapsulated or wrapped inside carbon shells that are formed by heating orrncarbonizing chemically modified apoferritin molecules. The mineralized biomaterials were carbonized in a controllable wayrnthat leads to quasi-spherical capsules with the Mn nanoparticles encapsulated in the cavity or center of the hollow cages. Thernproducts of reconstituted protein and carbon encapsulated nanoparticles were studied by transmission electron microscopy.rnThe growth mechanism of carbon encapsulated metal nanoparticles is discussed briefly.
