Mesophase-Pitch (MPP) based Powders for Manufacturing of Carbon-Carbon Composites

The substantial interest in carbon-carbon composites is mainly due to their potential to build stiff and damage tolerantrnlightweight structures at high temperatures. But elevated cycle times for the forming and subsequent densification processesrncause cost intensive manufacturing and thus the industrial use of these composites is limited mostly to aerospace and racingrnapplications. Access to new markets by a significant manufacturing cost reduction could be achieved by the pressure moldingrnof. The high carbon yield of this MPP powders offers the possibility of reducing the cost intensive, final densification stepsrncurrently performed by CVI or polymer pyrolysis. This paper describes the first results in processing of fiber reinforcedrnMPP-based laminates by modified filament winding, pressure molding and subsequent pyrolysis. In light of reducing thernfinal densification steps there is particular focus on composite?s residual porosity and mechanical properties after highrntemperature treatment.
