Development of High Performance Superconductors via Powder Metallurgy

Powder metallurgical (PM) techniques are currently being developed for the processing of high performance Nb_3Sn superconductor wires. Test results show that PM products/wires achieve critical current densities that are comparable to the highest values reported to date for superconductors made with the traditional stacking technique. Use of PM also eliminates many of the redundant operations associated with conventional billet processing. Potentially PM offers a means of producing wire with both increased performance and decreased cost. This presentation will summarize the status of the ongoing work to make PM composite wires, presenting both the progress made and the challenges encountered to date.
