A New Load Sensing Instrument for Field Monitoring of Roof Bolts

This paper describes a new load-monitoring device called SAFEBOLT (Stress And Force Evaluator in Bolts), which has been recently developed at McGill University. The device serves the role of conventional load cell as it permits the monitoring of bolt axial load at its head from the time of its installation underground. The SAFEBOLT instrument is embedded in a blind, central hole in the bolt head and is wire-free. Pilot tests at three underground mines were carried out and helped improve the initial design of the device.
