Gender Influences in Choosing an Information Systems Program

While on a sabbatical replacement at St. Francis Xavier University during the 1997/98 school year, I taught a couple of sections of courses for information systems students. In my new teaching assignment, I was pleasantly surprised to see so many young women in my classes. My background is in computer science, and the female student presence in my information systems classes was much higher than in the computer science field. Witnessing this phenomenon, I began a thrust of research to study the emerging trend of having female students in the Information Systems program at St. Francis Xavier University.
