Simulation of the behavior of rolling bearings requires models on vastly different physical scales. The machinery in which the bearing is mounted determines the loads, while the finest micro-structural constituents in the grains of the bearing material determines the fatigue life of the bearing. The paper describes the analysis with a complete set of models. On the macro scale a gearbox is modeled with housing, shafts, gears, and bearings. On the next level, a detailed simulation of one bearing is made, including motion of, and forces between, internal components. Finally, a roller to raceway contact is examined with respect to surface roughness, and its effect on life.
