The development of direct methanol polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell stack technology has been successful based on a bi-cell design that offers significant weight, size and operating cost reduction benefits when compared with the use of conventional bipolar cell design for low power applications. By using a novel bi-cell design, all of the cells have their cathodes on the outer surface and their anodes on the inner surface, in contact with the fuel (methanol). The stack performance for different methanol concentrations and environmental temperatures is examined.
