This presentation will describe the utility of a laboratory Dynamic Sheet Former (DSF) to simulate a variety of paper grades based on pure softwood and hardwood mechanical pulps and blends with bleached kraft pulps. Results will be presented to demonstrate the degree to which laboratory DSF papers can be used to simulate commercial papers and serve as a valuable tool for both pulp and papermakers involved in new product grade development.rnIn the first example we will present the results of a study on the affect of pulp quality on rotogravure print quality of newsprint grade DSF papers derived from pulp sampled from different locations of a commercial newsprint machine. It will be shown that the residual fines pulp content can play an important role on the structure, particularly roundness, of halftone dots. Other examples to be presented include studies on ink jet and multi-ply coated board grades. On the basis of quantitative print quality and formation (bulk and surface) measurements, using an ImageXpert? image analysis system, we will discuss the inter-relationship between paper structure (floe size/distribution) and the degradation in print quality features such as line quality and solid area uniformity.
