The human body's perception of vibration induced by low frequency noise ('noise-induced vibration') was measured on various parts of the body. The relationship between actual body surface vibrations on the forehead, chest and abdomen and the reported vibratory sensations was examined, and it was found that vibration acceleration levels measured on the chest and abdomen closely correlated with the vibratory sensations perceived in each of those places. It was also found that the correlation was independent of the frequency of the noise stimulus. These findings suggested that a man who is exposed to low frequency noise perceives vibratory sensations in the chest and abdomen by detecting noise-induced vibration on the body surface. With respect to vibration acceleration levels measured on the forehead, no close correlation with the perceived vibratory sensation in the head was found. In this case, it was found that the correlation was more frequency-dependent than was true for the chest and abdomen. This finding suggested that the mechanism to perceive vibratory sensation in the head is different from the ones that perceive vibratory sensation in the chest and abdomen.
