Objective of this work is to illustrate the main factors affecting the adhesion stability of metal-to-rubber composite, and to explore the mechanism of the metal-to-rubber bonding by vulcanization. The interactions between some Key ingredients in the adhesive and rubber compositions were studied with FTIR, DSC and DMTA. The interface of metal-adhesive-rubber was observed with SEM. It turned out that the adhesion enhancement of some ingredients was due to the formation of co-crosslinking. The metal-to-rubber bonding was improved by acrylate salt under cooperation of other ingredients. This was accounted for by formation of ionic bonds, broadening of cure temperature range of the adhesive and improvement of compatibility with the rubber. It was shown in the SEM pictures that no distinct boundary between adhesive and rubber could be seen while in the metal-adhesive interface compact regions and loose regions were remarkable. The weak boundary may be a reason for the adhesion instability of metal-to-rubber bonding.
