Leakage has become one of the greatest problems afflicting today's water systems. Due to their age and lack of adequate maintenance, many networks leak more water than they deliver. Traditionally, the solution has been to repair the leak when it appears on the surface. But this approach is inefficient and often unreliable. The optimum approach involves permanently dividing the network into a number of small areas called districts, supplied by a few key mains on which are installed flow meters. This is the solution adopted by ASM Brescia S.p.A. in northern Italy, which involved the building of a very accurate network analysis model in order to optimise the design of the districts and the creation of a sophisticated monitoring system to manage the districts In this way the leakage level is permanently kept at the minimum economic level.
