The paper presents the normalised radar cross sections of different forests (coniferous, mixed and deciduous) in the Moscow region. The measurements were carried out by SIR CSAR for different combinations of receiving/transmitting polarisations(HH,VV and HV) in different frequency bands (L adn C) at the number of obserivation angels (21~0 and 63~0). The model of the forest having layers consisting of linear scatterers with different characteristics was proposed. The possibility of forest types classification using L band polarimetric data was discussed.
