The paper presents the normalised radar cross sections /spl sigma//sup 0/ of different forests (coniferous, mixed and deciduous) in the Moscow region. The measurements were carried out by SIR C SAR for different combinations of receiving/transmitting polarisations (HH, VV and HV) in different frequency bands (L and C) at the number of observation angles (21/sup 0/ and 63/sup 0/). The model of the forest having layers consisting of linear scatterers with different characteristics was proposed. The possibility of forest type classification using L-band polarimetric data was discussed.
