Aqueous solutions of Type I polymer quenchants are used as alternatives to hot-water quenching to reduce the residual stresses and distortion of aluminum alloys. Although there are specifications describing the selection (SAE-AMS 3025A) and use (SAE-AMS 2770E) of these quenchants, the specified recommendations are often at odds with the actual as-quenched results obtained. To gain an insight into these problems, a statistical designed experiment was conducted to determine the effect of cross-section size, quenchant concentration and agitation on 2024 and 7075 sheet and 7075 bar on the ability to achieve Mil Handbook recommended design physical property minimums. The objective of this paper is to present and discuss the results of this study.
