Recent advances in machining technology have given the metalworking industry new high performance machinery with faster spindle speeds. When used with this new equipment, traditional tool holder interfaces and cutters can cause early failure of machinery components. The purpose of this paper is to describe what tool holders, tool holder interfaces, and cutter designes may be used to successfully machine at these higher rotational speeds. Damage to the machine tool, cutters, and part is avoided by careful selection of this critical hardware. Vibration Modal Analysis and Computerized Machining Prediction gives a new understanding of how to design, operate, and maintain machine tools. Application of these advanced techniques yields valuable information on tool holder selection and operating procedures. This information is presented with lessons learned as to what tool holder interfaces work under severe operating conditions, and why.
