A steam reforming process at elevated pressures with an external burner offers advantages in comparison to a steam reformer with integrated partial oxidation in terms of total efficiency for electricity production. The major aim of the JOULE HI project carried out by Forschungszentrum Julich, Haldor Topsoe and Siemens is to design, construct and test a steam reformer reactor with an external catalytic burner as the heat source, as well as a noble metal membrane for gas treatment, and a low-temperature fuel cell. In this paper, experimental results concerning the stationary and dynamic performance of the fuel processing system will be presented. The experimental investigations for the compact methanol reformer (CMR) include time-dependent emission values of the catalytic burner for startup conditions and the temperature-dependent hydrogen yield for the reformer part.
