The effects of physical characteristics, section,densities and moisture contents,of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubesens Mazel ex H.de Leh) on cutting forces were studied in this paper. The cutting force is absolutely different in different section and at the different radial part of the culm wall. The parallel tool force is the largest for end-grain (90-90) cutting, smaller for longitudinal (90-0) and the smallest for transverse section (0-90).The cutting force is different in different part of the radial wall due to the different density of vascular bundles in the radial direction. The density of bamboo has an obvious effect on the cutting forces.The higher the density is, the larger the tool force is. The moisture content of bamboo has a significant effect on the cutting force. The moisture content of the fiber-saturation point of bamboo is about 30%~35%.The parallel tool force is to increase with the increase of moisture content when the moisture content is lower than that and to decrease when the moisture content is higher than that.
