Studies on Machinability of Bamboo Culm. I.Effects of Stem Wall of Bamboo Culm in Radial Direction and Longitudinal Direction on Variation of Cutting-Force Components in Orthogonal Cutting of Bamboo (1)
The properties of bamboo are mainly determined by the structure of the culm, but in spite of its wide use knowledge of its anatomy is still rather limited. The purpose of this study is to make clear the machinability of the bamboo culm. Using Mosochiku (Phyllostachys pubescens MAZEL) grown at Kyushu district, the structure in its bamboo culm and the arrangement of the vascular bundles in internode region, nodal region and diaphragm region were observed microscopically, and the variations of the cutting-force components in orthogonal cutting of the bamboo culm were measured. In addition, several physical properties and several cutting phenomena were observed and measured. Using these results, the effects of the stem wall and the bamboo culm in radial direction and the longitudinal direction on the variations of the cutting-force components and the other cutting phenomena were clarified. Characteristics of the orthogonal cutting of bamboo in this study are discussed, comparing it with the orthogonal cutting of wood.
