The Galileo Ground Mission Segment (GMS) will include numerous Galileo Sensor Stations (GSS). An integral part of each GSS will be a Galileo Reception Chain (GRC) which includes an antenna, an atomic clock, a Public Regulated Service (PRS) reference receiver and a non-PRS reference receiver. Alcatel Alenia Space Italia (AASI), NovAtel, and Space Engineering have formed an industrial consortium design team to develop the GRC with the exception of the PRS receiver.rnThe GRC is a measurement engine, designed to provide high quality pseudorange, carrier phase, signal quality and status information to the Orbit Synchronization and Processing Facility (OSPF), the Integrity Processing Facility (IPF), and the Precise Timing Facility (PTF). The specifications for the receiver are very stringent, including challenging measurement performance and latency requirements. High reliability and safety engineering concerns prevail, with the receiver softwarerndeveloped to RTCA DO-178B Development Assurance Level (DAL) C.rnThis paper will provide an overview of the non-PRS GRC reference receiver development. The non-PRS GRC requirements will be reviewed, highlighting the challenges faced. The overall architecture of the non-PRS GRC will be presented. The paper will highlight the evolution of the receiver architecture, from AASI's and NovAtel's EGNOS RIMS B and C reference receivers respectively and NovAtel's WAAS-G2 reference receiver, through to the final architecture incorporating key technology elements from the industrial team.
