Driven by the availability of new technology, more complex software systems are being demanded today by users to meet their rapidly changing needs. Several new software development approaches have been introduced in recent years to help overcome the problems associated with systems development in rapidly changing environments. One of the most promising new approaches, "Ultra-Structure Theory" (UST) by J.G.Long, has been successfully used for real world applications and has demonstrated significant improvements over traditional development methods. UST is based on identifying and coding the time-invariant "Deep Structure" (DS) of a system and provides an advanced capability for incremental system development, extensibility and integration into new domains. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the Ultra-Structure paradigm and to illustrate the Ultra-Structure development approach by describing the conversion of a traditional relational database design to an Ultra-Structure design.
