Low energy cooling techniques without the use of CFC and HCFC refrigerants are already proven to be technologically feasible and environmentally safe. The objective of this paper is to determine the usability of evaporative cooling technologies. This paper proposes a simplified pre-design tool developed on a spreadsheet for use by engineers, contractors and technicans. It allows them to see more easily if an evaporative cooling system can be used for given building occupation and climate specifications. The results are displayed on the psychrometric chart as a nomograph that divides the chart into zones where the particular systems can or cannot achieve a desired supply temperature and humidity ratio, given the outdoor conditions.Superimposing city specific hourly climatic data on the chart shows for how many hours in the cooling season the evaporative air conditioning system will supply air at desired set points. Results are presented and discussed for three US and three-French locations.
