Broadband/ATM Developments in Singapore

This paper highlights the current and future directions of broadband/ATM developments in Singapore.It addresses the trends,development and implementation of broadband/ATM activities since the late 1980's.It provides a classification of organizations and their research and development activities.Technical developments,field trials and testbeds,standards-related activities as well as actual implementations of broadband/ATM are discussed.Essentially,broadband developments in Singapore can be broadly divided into 2 categories:the infrastructure developer and the content provider.Starting from the service provider,Singapore Telecom (ST),we will look at the excellent telecommunications infrastructure Singapore has enjoyed over the past decade.This paper will also trace the development of the telecommunications infrastructure from beginning till the present day.We will also discuss the role of the National Computer Board(NCB),the statutory board responsible for the national computerization activities and also its current and most important project,the IT2000 Program.The NCB is a major content provider and a primary driver of ATM.We will also discuss the work of other R&D organizations and commercial sectors involved in broadband activities in Singapore.Lastly,we will look at the status of the ATM Special Interest Group (SIG);the activities as well as the goals and objectives of the ATM SIG.The role of the ATM Forum in Asia will also be covered.
