The approaches outlined in this paper express some of the most recent trends in the field of endurance characterization. Besides phenomenological approaches able to describe insulating material and system behavior under multistress, models based on the explanation of the mechanisms which give rise to electrical and multi-stress damage provide knowledge of the physical quantities promoting degradation and failure as well as tools for insulation characterization and life prediction. Investigations on degradation mechanisms might lead to the derivation of short-time test methodologies providing information on long-term behavior, which is one of the next frontiers for insulation research. Another fundamental topic is derivation of life models for "real" materials, that is, materials with some amount of imperfections and impurities. For this purpose, the probabilistic approach seems quite appropriate.
