Radiation Protection for the First Korea Heavy-ion Medical Accelerator (KHIMA) Facility

The number of particle therapy facilities is increasing worldwide due to the encouraging results obtained at research facilities such as the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (USA), the Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research GSI (Germany), and the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator (HIMAC) in Chiba (Japan). The first hospital-based heavy-ion therapy facility is under construction in Busan, Korea, at the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences [KIRAMS]. The project was originally designed to develop a compact superconducting cyclotron for hadron therapy able to deliver forefront beams of heavier ions, essentially carbon ions of energy, 430 MeV/u.
