Radiation Protection and Dosimetry in Medicine- An Overview

In recent years, radiological protection, radiation safety and dosimetry issues have emerged concerning the medical applications of ionizing radiation. Amongst several other issues, the dissemination of the use of Computer Tomography (CT), including for paediatric exams and the growing number of interventional radiology and interventional cardiology procedures have contributed to raise the concerns about the need to more fully justify the medical practices using ionizing radiation and to optimize the protection, reducing the dose to the patients and to the medical staff in the medical applications of ionizing radiation. The importance of implementing the principle of justification in the medical exposures and to further progress in the implementation of the principle of optimization of the protection is of paramount importance for the establishment of a robust international system of radiological protection.
