Resistance tests in ice were performed for a model of an icebreaking patrol ship of Japan Coast Guard. Tests were made for two level ice thicknesses and for three towing speeds. The model was equipped with a pressure sensing system to measure ice pressure acting on the hull from the stem to station No. 5-1/2. Data from the pressure sensors showed that in the bow area ice loading on the hull takes place in horizontally elongated narrow areas while it is more rounded in the area near the mid-body. Data were analysed from a viewpoint of ship resistance in ice. The longitudinal component of local ice load was calculated taking into account inclination angles of hull. The sum of the longitudinal components showed a good correlation with total resistance. It was shown that ice pressure at the stem significantly contributes to the ice resistance for thicker ice and higher speed.
