Perimeter air quality monitoring is generally performed at MGP sites during remedialrnactivities in which sub-surface soil affected by MGP residuals is disturbed. Most MGP siterninvestigations indicate the presence of elevated levels of compounds typically associated withrnMGP sites, including semi-volatile organic compounds, particularly Polycyclic AromaticrnHydrocarbons (PAHs) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Based on the assumedrnprevalence of PAHs and VOCs on MGP sites, and the general toxicity of these classes ofrncompounds, PAHs and VOCs are generally selected as the target analytes to be included in anyrnperimeter ambient air quality monitoring program.rnThe choice of instrumentation or methods will depend on the level of sophisticationrndictated by the site-specific risk assessment. This paper discusses a number of sampling andrnmonitoring equipment that can be used for MGP site fence-line monitoring. The benefits andrndisadvantages of the various instrumentation options are discussed.
