The nine-day replacement of the george p.coleman bridge

In a 9-day,24-hour-a-day operation,Tidewater Construction Corporation removed,replaced and reopened to traffic the six truss spans of the Coleman Bridge,an engineering feat that became a cover story of Engineering News-Record.This feat was the culmination of 9 years of planning,environmental studies,and design.The background and a description of the project was presented to this Conference in 1994 by George M.Clendenin,Assistant State Structure and Bridge Engineer,(IBC Paper 94-6) at which time bids had been received and work was about to begin.This paper describes the ensuing events from the perspective of both Tidewater Construction (contractor) and Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas,Inc.(engineer).The construction phase started with partnering and we are pleased to report that it ended with partnering.
