In early 1999 the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) upgraded their seismic designrnrequirements by adopting revisions to the American Association of State Highway and TransportationrnOfficials (AASHTO) Standard Specification for Highway Bridges, Seismic Design Provisions of DivisionrnI-A. Not long after this the SCDOT secured the services of Earth Tech, Inc. Consulting Engineers torndesign two new replacement overpasses over I-26 in Charleston, South Carolina. These bridges replacernthe existing structures carrying US Route 52 and Ashley Phosphate Road over I-26. Earth Tech decidedrnon two-span continuous steel plate girder bridges for these overpasses and provided sliding isolationrnbearings to reduce the forces on the substructure during a seismic event.
