THE STATUS OF KOREAN NUCLEAR CODES AND STANDARDS

Korea Electric Power Industry Code (KEPIC),rna set of integrated standards applicable to therndesign, construction and operation of electricrnpower facilities including nuclear power plants,rnhas been developed on the basis of referring tornthe prevailing U.S. codes and standards whichrnhad been applied to the electric power facilitiesrnin Korea. Being the developing and managingrnorganization of KEPIC, Korea ElectricrnAssociation (KEA) published its first edition inrn1995, the second in 200,0 and is expected tornpublish the 2005 edition. KEPIC was applied tornthe construction of Uljin Nuclear Units 5&6 inrn1997, and will be applicable to the constructionrnof forthcoming nuclear power plants in Korea.rnAlong with the effectuation of the Agreement onrnTechnical Barriers to Trade (TBT) in 1995, therninternational trend related to codes and standardsrnis changing rapidly. The KEA is, therefore,rnmaking its utmost efforts so as for KEPIC tornkeep abreast with the changing environment inrninternational arena. KEA notified ISO/IECrnInformation Centre of its acceptance of the Codernof Good Practice in the Agreement on TBT.rnThe 2005 KEPIC edition will be retrofittedrnaccording to the ISO/IEC Guide 21- Adoption ofrnInternational Standards as regional or nationalrnstandards. KEA's efforts will help KEPICrncorrespond with international standards such asrnISO/IEC standards, and internationally recognizedrnstandards such as ASME codes and standards.
