Alumina clogging of the submerged entry nozzle (SEN) restricts the sequence length and has a great influence on stable casting operations in the continuous casting of steel. The materials and the structure of SEN's bore have a great influence on alumina clogging. Water model investigations have led to the development of an advanced SEN design that significantly reduces alumina clogging. Details of the materials and bore structure of the advanced SEN are presented and practical benefits to casting operations in an operational slab casting plant are reported.
