Resistance to shear is one of the most important load cases that has to be considered when designing steel structures. This is a widely studied item in carbon steel but not in stainless steel structures due to its recent introduction into metallic construction. Studies in this field have demonstrated that current design rules in Eurocode 3, Part 1-4 "General rules-Supplementary rules for stainless steel" for shear design leads to overly conservative results. Therefore, new design methods to determine the shear resistance in stainless steel beams should be developed. This paper aims to present an experimental and numerical investigation to study the response of stainless steel plated girders subjected to shear, attempting to find the differences between the behaviour of beams with rigid and non-rigid end posts. Experimental and numerical results show the different evolution of the tension field for each of the two cases and confirm the conservative character of the current European design guidance. Moreover, a comparative analysis of different design methods has been carried out.
