A novel control scheme for a grid-side PWM Current Source Converter (CSC) is proposed in this paper. The proposed scheme provides the ability to operate the rectifier with a leading firing angle, and hence increasing the range of reactive current control. This feature is attractive for high power wind energy systems where the injected reactive current or VAR can be used in steady state or fault conditions for the purpose of power factor control, improved power system stability or grid support. Simulations using Matlab/Simulink and experimental verification on a laboratory prototype were carried out and results are discussed.
