Potential Novel Derivatives from Noise Mapping Technologies

For the purpose of assessing and predicting noise impacts on planned developments or noise sources, noise modelling methodologies was originally implemented in computation software to calculate predicted noise levels at limited locations. No matter inputs to these software or presentation of results were only designed for professional users with extensive training. With the help of faster computational speed and availability of digital topographic data, in 2002, EU directive requested EC countries to develop 2D noise maps to facilitate public easily understanding of noise environment from computational results. Recently, noise modelling software is integrated with other information technologies, such as database management application, geographic information system, 3D computer graphic, etc. to enhance the data management and to enhance the comprehension of noise information for public. Virtual reality and photorealistic aspects of computer graphic were well developed in computer games and animation with latest rapid development and popular of computer graphic hardware in customer level. 3D audio effect was also swiftly advanced to meet the need of interactive computer games. The virtual globe technology was successfully applied in Internet to allow user freely moving around the virtual earth environment to see geographical and man-made features. There is not much integration these available technologies in noise modelling. This paper describes the potential derivatives from the above computing technologies to prepare data such as data collection and input, to edit a model, to disseminate and present results via Internet to public. In addition to the application of 3D photorealistic computer graphic, there is potential to create a virtual earth environment with realistic auralization for noise modelling and assessment.
